DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 25\, 2018\n“Dramatic Conservation: Treatment of Albert Bierstadt’s Domes of Yosemite” with Oliver Watkiss.\nPresented by ArtCare\, expert Oliver Watkiss will discuss his experience with the structural treatment of paintings. This year ArtCare Conservation undertook the treatment of this large (15′ x 10′) painting from the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum in Vermont.  This work was painted in 1867 and displayed in Boston\, Philadelphia\, and New York to give viewers a sense of the West.  The treatment included varnish removal and lining. During the treatment new discoveries were made about the working method of the artist and the technical history of the painting. \n  \nAbout the ArtCare Conservation Lecture Series\nThe ArtCare Conservation Lecture Series presents specialized topics in art conservation for art lovers\, collectors and arts professionals. ArtCare\, Inc.\, a Rustin Levenson Company that specializes in fine art conservation\, shares examples of their decades of art conservation and restoration experiences working on individual and museum collection pieces. SUMMARY:Call to Artists For "Affair en Plein Air\," a Two-day Outdoor Painting Event at the Deering Estate
DESCRIPTION:A call to artists is currently underway for “Affair En Plein Air\,” a two-day outdoor juried painting experience with partner GroveHouse Artists at the Deering Estate on Saturday\, January 20\, 2018\, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday\, January 21\, 2018\, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. \nCategories include: Adults (18 years and older) and high school students (Grades 9-12). Judging will take place on Sunday\, January 21 at 1:30 p.m. The event is juried by Gerald Obregon. Registration deadline is January 13\, 2018. Please note that no registrations will be taken on the day of the event. \nPlein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ]) painting is artwork that is completed in the “open and full air\,” rather than work done in a studio or from photos or other recorded images. Artists will paint scenes on-site and in the plein air of the beautiful and historic Deering Estate grounds. \nCost:\n$35 Adult registration fee for Non-GroveHouse Artists (up to 2 pieces)\n$25 Adult registration fee for GroveHouse Artists members (up to 2 pieces)\n$25 High school students\, Grades 9-12\, with one chaperone (up to 2 pieces)\nLight snacks\, coffee\, and water will be provided; please bring a lunch and all supplies. \nRegistration Information:\nArtists interested in participating in the two-day outdoor juried painting event must complete a formal application available on the Deering Estate website. Student cash prizes totaling $500.\nAdults and students will be judged on-site. \nAbout the Juror:\nGerald Obregon has been an art teacher in the Miami-Dade County Public School system since 1998\, and currently is on the faculty at Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts\, a magnet school focused on the different artistic disciplines for grades 6 through 12. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City\, and a Master of Science in Art Education from Florida International University. \nGerald’s philosophy of art education is that students will work up to expectations if the bar is set at a high level. Throughout the years\, that philosophy has resulted in tremendous success for his students both locally and nationally. In 2014 he was given the Skevy Ralis Art Education Award of Honor (Middle School) by the Dade Art Educators Association\, and he was recognized as the 2015 Teacher of the Year by the faculty and staff at Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts. \nIn addition to teaching\, he is an emerging artist who has had his work exhibited in shows in Miami\, St. Augustine\, Melbourne\, Sarasota\, and most recently in Denver\, Colorado. The book describes using the materials and techniques of paintings to make art historical assessments. The series is free and open to the public and will be held in the historic Stone House Ballroom.
